This stool exudes the charm of a bygone era and, with its solid craftsmanship, embodies the type of high-quality, long-lasting piece of furniture. The stool has been lovingly refurbished.
The stool is made of bent beech wood and has a bentwood ring underneath the seat for stability. Michael Thonet developed this construction principle and applied it to many of his chairs and stools. The seat is made of plywood that is slightly bent inwards – it was missing and I replaced it. The seat frame has the slight profiling that suggests that the stool probably dates from the 19th century. The surfaces of the stool are stained rosewood and covered with shellac. Traces of wear on the surfaces were left – see detailed photos. The stool contains the Kohn milling plate in the seat frame, but the company name can only be guessed at: The lettering was J.&J. Kohn.
The stool is in good, restored overall condition: all screws are tight and the surfaces have been painted with shellac. Beautiful collector’s item and design classic.
