The chess board comes out and can be reversed to reveal a checkers gameboard.
The table comes with an antique English chess set made of black and red lacquered led (in the original carton box). This set is not original to the table but it is a perfect match!
The table together with the chess set is very pleasing to the eye as shown in the pictures.
Background information ‘Nieuwe Kunst’ (Dutch Art Nouveau in Applied Arts)
The Dutch applied arts in early 1900s were greatly influenced by Jugendstil and Art Nouveau which – in the Netherlands- manifested itself as the New Art. This innovative movement was driven by the designers and decorative artists, who at the end of the 19th century looked for a way out of the neo-styles and aimed to replace machine work with craftsmanship again, with a focus on clear lines and craftmanship. Pieces from this period are very recognizable because of intricate detailing, inlays and woodcarving.
