Robert Gerlach was born in 1887. He studied architecture with Professor Joseph Hoffmann from 1906-1909 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. Upon completion of his studies, he worked as an interior architect. Latter he worked as a designer in the workshops of Hagenauer
and Bramberger. From the mid-1920s, he was a successful, self-employed architect in Vienna.
