This rug, of contemporary production, has a decoration inspired by the Art and Craft movement, born at the end of the 19th century in Great Britain as a reaction of artists and intellectuals to the intense industrialization.
It was the artist William Morris who started the Arts and Crafts current and founded the modern concept of design, influenced by the ideas of the painter and poet John Ruskin, who looked to the Middle Ages as an exemplary period for the simplicity of man’s work in contrast with the mechanical nature of modern industrial production.
This new vision influenced English taste for a few decades and generated several workshops in which the so-called major arts, such as architecture, painting and sculpture, merged with the applied arts, giving life to unique and excellent products.
The new production of carpets, fabrics, furniture, metals was therefore born as anti-industrial. In addition to enhancing human work, Morris lays the foundations of the principles of modern design, because his production is the result of research and is original, eclectic and modern in contrast with the style of the time.
