In the earliest years of the 1900s much of the daily life in Europe was overshadowed by the horrors of the first world war. Loss and suffering affected millions and millions and it is only logical that artisans all over Europe were ‘inspired’ (‘affected’ probably is a better word) to take those emotions and express them via their work. This stunning bronze plaque seems to perfectly capture a woman mourning over the grave of a loved one. It has an anonymous quality to it in the way that she could be mourning over her husband or son and by that we also mean that this peace is not personalized and could therefor still be used by any wife or mother who has lost someone. From the flowing (almost organic) manner in which her clothing / robe is draping her body and the gravestone, one can tell that this piece is made right around the hey-days of the European Jugendstil era. Just right of the right foot there is a maker’s monogram and although we don’t know who the artist was, this clearly is the work of a seasoned artisan. The large Size makes this sad but serene scene recognizable from a larger distance as well and the stunning patina makes this handcrafted antique even more impressive. Thanks to the thick metal wire on the back, this work of art is safe and easy to mount on your wall as well.
