An adorable, vintage dog portrait of superb quality, dated 1931. This original charcoal drawing of a pug dog is signed and dated by artist, J. Steinel (see photo). It could possibly be an artwork made by the German sculptor Johann Paul Steinel (1878 Heidelberg – 1935 München) at the very end of his career. The artwork has been sourced in eastern France, next to the German border. This dog portrait is very well executed and it is definitely made by an artist with great anatomical knowledge and an attention to details… just look at the Jugendstyle inspired signature (see photos).
Like many charcoals drawings, the portrait is drawn on brown paper. The drawing has been very elegently framed in a beautiful wood frame with a gilded spect and an inner rim in a slightly shiny, dark-green finish (see photo). Attention has clearly been made to every detail of this artwork.
In very good vintage condition. The drawing has obviously been very well preserved under glass for many years. The drawing shows no signs of past humidity, nor fading from sun-exposure. The frame shows very minor signs of wear consistent with age (see photos). The back is clean and untouched.
A rare animal portrait not to be missed.
