William Francis Greenwood & Sons were established in the 19th century as furniture makers in York – they suggest that they were established in 1829 in their advertisements. They had a branch at 86 Newbrough Street, and at 26 Huntriss Row, Scarborough by 1880, when they described themselves as ‘Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer, Dealers in Ancient Furniture, Works of Art, Old China, Bronzes and Curiosities’; they relinquished their Scarbrough business in 1890 and in the 1890s the business opened a branch at 112 New Bond Street, London. The firm also had a branch in Lord Street, Southport, in the 1890s.
This antique stool is of good proportions and remains in original condition, it would look stunning in a period home. (Seat H: 51cm).
