Vintage Design
This armchair hails from the Zheijang province, crafted in the mid-1800s from elm wood. Originally part of a pair, the striking piece boasts detailed carvings along its backrest, apron and spandrels, drawing the eye with its complementary light and dark colour scheme. The seat, arms and legs are coated in a golden hue that offsets the chair’s intricate ornamentation.
The backrest of the armchair features a deeply engraved depiction of two figures, believed to be farmworkers. Further accentuating its design are a bat symbol, signifying luck, and scrolling and floral patterns along the apron and spandrels that create a tapered effect near the feet.
The chair’s unique design blends elements of the more traditional styles, with its arms extending beyond the front posts and headrest flush with the rear side posts. Its exquisite carvings add a striking touch, making it an ideal accent piece for a hallway or bedroom.
