Louis-Jean-Sylvestre Majorelle (26 September 1859 – 15 January 1926) was a French decorator and furniture designer who created his designs in the French tradition of the ébéniste. He was one of those who made the most significant contributions to the metamorphosis of furniture. Louis Majorelle mastered the exquisite framework of Art Nouveau furniture with exotic wood inlays.
He used a wide palette of wood from France and abroad. The mellow tones and encompassing a variety of greys provided by oak, walnut, ash, elm, holly, plane, chestnut, cherry, pear, and beech serve Majorelle in peaceful and purposely monochromatic compositions. Other exotic woods, such as rosewood, yellow lemon tree, silver maple, purple amaranth, jacaranda, red satin, amourette, black or green ebony, the red or black palm, and others, formed the most extensive colored swell.
