Entirely charming and winsome, this pair of bookends depicting nude children with golden hair who are sleeping on pale blue beds, was probably executed by one of the ceramic artists associated with the Wiener Werkstätte (or Vienna Workshop) in the 1910s and 1920s. Established in 1903 by Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann, the Vienna Workshop brought together architects, artists and designers working in ceramics, fashion, silver, furniture and the graphic arts, including Michael Powolny, Berthold Löffler, Vally Wieselthier and others who produced a wide array of ceramic pieces. The terra cotta bottoms include the production number — 907 — and an indistinctive mark.
